The Water’s Edge

After a busy and eventful afternoon, I sat in the passenger side of an enormous beast that some call a truck and listened as my sweet friend tried to articulate her emotions into well received words. One year ago her family was called out on an adventure and now they are being prepared to be called out once more. I listened. I pondered. I cried a little on the inside and reminded her that they need to keep on going with God.

If God asked you this day if you would go on an adventure with Him when He called, what would your answer be? For most of us our first reaction would most likely be a heart leaping yes, but do we realize the weight of such a decision?

And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

When we are filled with the Spirit of God we are filled with an anything-is-possible kind of Spirit. A Spirit that knows no bounds for God’s mighty power is boundless. We are wise to remember that this is the very same God that called a few simple fishermen out of the warm calm water challenging them to drop everything and follow Him to become fishers of men. And they did it.

I believe that is exactly what happens when we die to ourselves and ask to be filled with this adventurous Holy Spirit: we are called out of our warm comfortable waters to head out into the blue yonder. Whether He calls us out physically or not, He calls us just the same. Mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, we are asked to step out in our faith and go where His mighty winds will blow us.

And these adventures are not random but well planned by a master architect. The greater our faith and willingness to go, the deeper our spiritual journey.

Some of us already have our bags packed eagerly awaiting His voice over the horizon. Others are more reluctant to go for they prefer to keep their feet grazing the sand just below the waters edge. And for each His patience is the very same for we cannot hurry along the unfolding of a delicate blueprint. The fragile papers of our story would tear and require much repair.

Let us remember that in this very moment, now, our blueprint is unrolling. And we must ask ourselves if we are eagerly awaiting or comfortably grazing the sand for whichever side of the waters edge we are can make all the difference.

Father, I ask you to lead me for I will follow. Whatever the task you have carefully planned out for me, help me to know where I am to go. You are unfolding my story and I want to be eagerly awaiting my very next step. In Jesus name, amen.
