Countdown to Christmas – Day 11
You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not without results. We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition. For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts. You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness. We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority. Instead, we were like young children among you.
Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.
1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
Adversity is a common struggle of life. We face challenges every day that can either break us or make us stronger. A research psychologist by the name of Angela Duckworth conducted an in-depth study of a human condition called grit. Grit is the combination of passion and perseverance that creates long-term success in achieving goals. Grit is what drives those who seem to have the odds stacked against them to succeed. And, it would appear, grit is exactly what saturated the heart of soul of the apostle Paul who- against all odds- passionately preached the gospel with perseverance.
But in order for us to succeed in all God’s plans and purposes for our lives, we must heed to the apostle Paul’s wisdom taking note of the deep truths laced within his words. Paul faced much adversity in his travels coming against many who would challenge him in his good works. And with each challenge his heart was tested. With his motivation and character on the line, God would test Paul’s heart so others would know he could be trusted. For a heart that is tested is a heart that is trusted.
The motivation behind our actions and grit of our spirit may not be known to others, but God always knows the condition of our heart. Often our hearts are tested so we may understand why we desire to succeed. Do we crave accolades from others in order to feel worthy in our efforts? Do we seek praise for a job well done from those whom we serve? Do we believe the spotlight will bring us happiness and joy everlasting?
But the truth we must acknowledge is that if we are seeking the spotlight, we simply are not ready to stand in it. Light from the world will eventually burn us but the light of the Spirit will fill us with warmth. God greatly desires success for us in our good works but with that success come adversity and challenge. When we are obedient to Christ, accepting God’s plans and purposes, our hearts are tested so they may be trusted with greatness.
Father, when I am tempted to be pleasing to others, may I always remember that it is you- and only you- that must find favour in my actions. Test my heart so I may be trusted with your great plans. In Jesus name, amen.
