Through modern science, we know that stress is a physical threat. But we also know that our muscles need to be under stress in order for our body to gain strength. And we know that for our physical muscles to be restored they need physical rest. There are many things that aid our bodies to deal with physical stressors, but what of our spiritual muscles? I believe there is great truth that our spiritual muscles need to be pushed and put to the test in order for them to gain strength as well.

Perhaps our spiritual muscles need to confront a threat in order for them to be strengthened. By God’s Word, we know the truth that iron sharpens iron. But for iron to be sharpened it must collide with something that is rough.

Romans 8:32, Since God did not spare even his own Son for us but gave him up for us, won’t he also surely give us everything else we need?

Perhaps it is necessary that we as Christians must collide with people, situations, and circumstances that are rough so that our convictions are able to embed themselves deeper into our soul. The greater our success in dealing these threats- handing them over to our Shepherd who leads us to still waters, giving us the peace that surpasses all understanding- the greater our spiritual muscles grow allowing the threats we encounter to softly fade so that we may experience spiritual rest.

And as those threats softly fade, our physical bodies too will be able to experience the beauty of physical rest. Then, by body, soul, and spirit, we will be able to love The Lord our God with all that we have offer. And this is a very good thing.

Father, though our muscles may be sore and our arms limp from wielding our shield, we know that you will meet all our needs- the ones we know we need and even the ones we don’t- gifting us a peace that spreads from the inside out. In Jesus name, Amen.
