A Moses Moment. An encounter with God where your eyes and ears become so incredibly fixated upon the presence of God. The Moses Moment is your burning bush.
We live in a culture where we are often distracted by the noise around us. We shed our soul and, sometimes in a moment of vulnerability, admit that we have difficulty hearing God. We so desperately need Him yet are terrified of the encounter because sometimes it requires us to witness moments of ugliness that we would prefer to keep buried.
In Exodus 3, we learn of the encounter Moses had with God when he travelled up Mount Horeb:
Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
What struck me so profoundly upon studying this passage is the moment when God spoke to Moses. When Moses was paying attention to God, God chose to speak.
Because we have been justified by the blood of Christ before The Lord, we need not have fear to look upon God nor be in His presence. Through Jesus we are given the gift of having an incredibly intimate relationship with The Lord. And He desires to have an intimate relationship with us, His children. Even wayward ones at that. Perhaps if we keep our eyes on The Lord and pay attention -knowing that nothing escapes the eyes of heaven- we can have our burning bush encounters with The Lord.
Alas, this is a journey I have taken before. My given name is Melissa, but in my soul I easily identify as the wayward child. I have the ability within my flesh to be unruly, stubborn and sometimes defiant. I had dedicated one year of my life – 365 days- to paying attention and seeking my Moses Moments while standing firm upon one scripture:
Romans 8:28, And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Through the journey, and blogging about it to all of my readers, I emotionally broke.
What Jesus did to me emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, as well as how He revealed Himself to this child each and every day, changed the way I see the world and everyone in it.
I suppose you could say my heart grew three sizes bigger while my pride was challenged to shrink three sizes smaller. Jesus, in all His power and glory, took this wayward child and began to rebuild her from the inside out. And He continues to do so for I am perfectly imperfect and a masterpiece in progress. This journey with Christ that we are on in life is our process of sanctification. Until the day we are glorified before the throne of God, He will continue to remove the ugliness embedded so deeply within our souls- our minds and emotions- so that we may have a heart like His.
And this wayward child is forever and ever kind of grateful.
So here I am, preparing to do this journey again for 31 days. I am choosing gratefulness. I am choosing to put forth my loving list. I am choosing Jesus. And I am asking you to not only follow me on this 31 day journey, but to begin your own. Seek Him and you shall find Him. He will speak when we, His wayward children, unite and pay attention in order to find our Moses Moments.
Father, I ask that you continue to break me. I ask that you continue to mold me. I ask that you continue to rip out the ugliness embedded into my soul and replace it with the goodness of your character. And I know that in the asking, I am laying much at your feet. I am asking you to test the genuineness of my faith. I am asking you to love me. Amen.
