It Takes A Village – Week 5
In the final chapter of the book of Deuteronomy Moses’ death has finally come to pass. As foretold by the Lord, Moses climbed Mount Nebo, from the plains of Moab to the top of Mount Pisgah, and the Lord presented to Moses a most spectacular view of the lands promised to Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. It was there that Moses passed away and the Lord buried him in the valley in Moab, only the Lord knowing whereabouts of his grave.
Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, who did all those signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
Deuteronomy 34:10-12
The scriptures tell us the Israelites mourned the loss of their leader and for a ‘period of sadness’ of approximately thirty days. We can only imagine the weeping and heartache felt among the people who never again had another prophet akin to Moses. The Lord knew Moses face to face and had instilled within him great power to complete miraculous signs and wonders for the children of Israel.
And Moses’ legacy is one of the greatest in recorded history. Though an imperfect man who suffered greatly for his disobedience, He remained faithful to the God he served and the life’s mission put before him. His legacy is a testament of the community he led through periods of sorrow and sadness, joy and gladness.
Life Application:
At one time or another we have all contemplated who might attend at our funeral. Would there be face amongst the crowd that would surprise us? Or would there be weeping, mourning, and a period of sadness at our demise? Perhaps the greatest testament of our community and the village of which we belong are the actions and words of those who carry forth our legacy. We are command by Christ to love one another as we would love ourselves, so we must ask ourselves difficult questions such as how our love affected the lives of others, and how we used our gifts and abilities to show love towards others. Because those who experience great love, give great love. And when we remain faithful to Christ’s mission and the Lord we serve, He can and will use us to complete good works strengthening the community of which we belong.
Father, the legacy I leave will be birthed from the lives of others. Help me to lead with conviction and love with compassion. I desire to know you face to face bearing witness to your miracles and wonders so my community will be strengthened by your presence. In Jesus name, amen.
