When Our Back Is Against The Wall

I watched as my child curled herself up against the wall with tightly gripped hands. I watched as my child let salty tears slip down her soft pink cheeks as she poured out her heart to Jesus. I watched and prayed and prayed some more that whatever questions she was throwing at the throne, Jesus would answer swiftly. And answer her He did. She shared what it was that Jesus guided her to do, encouraging her that He would give her the faith to do it, but in all her human frailty she wavered in being obedient to His voice.

These are the moments where our faith and obedience to The Lord’s instruction are put to the test, and we must lean upon wisdom to know that it begins at a most impressionable young age. These are the moments where we desperately need to guard our hearts from the lies of the enemy for these are the very moments that lay the stones in the path our choices will take us.

There are so many days, so many moments, where our messy faith wavers and we struggle to know what it is that The Lord desires of us. Dreams, visions, and grand plans are great, but if we aren’t seeking the voice of the Holy Spirit for direction in our lives, then we will never reach our greatest potential. We may just find ourselves setting up our tent in the land of ‘what was’ and ‘what could have been’.

In the words of pastor Mike Miller, [next to dying without Jesus] the worst thing that could happen is dying with potential. But what is it that The Lord expects of us when seeking to live out our potential?

Micah 6:8, The Lord has told you, human, what is good;
he has told you what he wants from you:
to do what is right to other people,
love being kind to others,
and live humbly, obeying your God.

The Lord has given us clear instruction of what He expects as we journey forward in our process of sanctification. Now is the time for us to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit unwavering in our obedience. We are to do what is right to others, to not just be kind but love the action of kindness, and live with a spirit of humility heeding to His words even when we don’t want to. But let’s admit that some days when the salty tears threaten to choke us and our back really is against the wall, being obedient is the most difficult choice to make.

But when we seek Jesus first in all we do, listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit when we call upon the throne, Jesus’ very presence can bring triumph to those moments when we’re tempted to succumb to our human frailty.

Father, help me to once again hear your voice when you call. I want to love on others and love the act kindness itself for I know how it feels when someone offers kindness to me. May a spirit of humility be birthed inside of my soul so that I may obey your Word. In Jesus name, amen.
