Wake Up

I leaned back in the armless chair letting my back lean against the cushion for comfort. The sermon was powerful and challenging as I let the words roll over my spirit. The individual next me to me could not move their hands fast enough in attempt to keep up their notes with the message.

Throughout the morning I could hear a faint rumble coming from across the aisle. It was not loud enough to be of great distraction so one could easily tune it out. But as the morning was coming to an end and we bent forward as a congregation to close in prayer, I heard the rumble again in all its glory.

I glanced over to the side and noticed an older woman completely asleep. There she sat in the chair with her head hung forward at an awkward angle, her mouth completely open complete with drool pooling in the corners. During this incredible moment of silence and deep prayer where people were in the sacred midst of emotional healing, this poor souls snoring could be heard echoing off the wooden beamed ceiling.

Perhaps she was one who’s own soul was in desperate need of that particular message. Perhaps that sacred moment was to be her sacred moment where she would have been forever changed by God’s Word and Christ’s truth. Perhaps. But unfortunately she slept right through it.

Ephesians 5:14, This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

The Apostle Paul ministered to the church of Ephesus during two of his missionary journeys. Here he saw many come to faith in Jesus Christ, yet he also came up against many who did not take kindly to his preaching. The book of Ephesians is a letter Paul wrote to the church while he was imprisoned in Rome, and it deals with many topics that are at the very core of what it means for us to be a Christian.

In this verse Paul clearly warns us that we cannot stay asleep in our sin but be fully awake. We must be awake and alert knowing that we are healed by His blood, submitting to the leading of the Holy Spirit so that Christ’s light can shine from within for all others to witness His great power at work.

Now is our time to know the truth that staying asleep in our sin will not lend us any favours. God is at work around us and, if we’re not paying attention, we just might miss our moment to claim our freedom in Jesus so that He can fulfill a great purpose within us.

Father, help me to be awake and alert to your calling. May I forever know that I am healed and being made holy for your purposes. Let your light shine brightly within me so that all others will witness you and not me. In Jesus name, amen.
