Spiritual Reflexes

The wind blew fiercely across the parking lot causing my young daughter’s jacket to whip open. I bent down, my head falling forward, to pull up her zipper. As I raised myself up my child decided it was an opportune moment to dance some sort of uncoordinated jig that caused me to leap nervously forward to protect her.

As I leapt forward I witnessed a man strolling in our direction on our righthand side. He seemed lost in his own thoughts while reaching for his keys heading towards his car. In that opportune moment of the uncoordinated jig, his attention was diverted to my daughter yet his eyes never left his keys. With the swiftest of reflexes, arms springing out to his sides, he skirted into our path using himself as a shield of sorts to block my child from any oncoming harm. As swiftly as he skirted into our path, he skirted out again the second I had my child’s hand safely clasp within my own. And still his eyes never left his keys.

When our minds and emotions are fixed upon the future meditating on our dreams, visions, and grand plans, how swift are our spiritual reflexes when the winds of strife begin to fiercely blow our way?

Hebrews 3:12-14, So watch your step, friends. Make sure there’s no evil unbelief lying around that will trip you up and throw you off course, diverting you from the living God. For as long as it’s still God’s Today, keep each other on your toes so sin doesn’t slow down your reflexes. If we can only keep our grip on the sure thing we started out with, we’re in this with Christ for the long haul. These words keep ringing in our ears: Today, please listen; don’t turn a deaf ear as in the bitter uprising. (The Message)

When we are seeking God’s face, pressing into His Word and preparing for our purpose- preparing for our now- it is imperative that we become wise to the schemes of an enemy who desires nothing more than to distract us. The enemy of our soul will stop at nothing to tear us down. He greatly desires to manipulate our thoughts and stir up strife in order for us to lose faith and wallow in unbelief that God can and will use us to accomplish His great works.

The only way for us to recognize those bitter winds of strife is to train up our spiritual reflexes. We must know His Word in order to use His Word as our greatest weapon. We must submit unto His presence in order for us to stand upon the truth that He is present, and we must be wise to keep our eyes and ears open to His leading even in the moments when we may appear to be distracted by something as simple as our car keys.

Father, as I live out this day, help me to keep my eyes and ears open to your leading. Help me to train up my spiritual reflexes so that I may not stumble into the enemy’s pit. Lead me as walk with steadfast feet though the winds of strife may threaten to blow me down. In Jesus name, amen.
