25 Days of Advent: Forged for our Hope – Day 25

With steady fingers, every last gift was carefully wrapped with bright bows gracing the top of each box. Laid beneath the sparkly tree, they are arranged just so with the most extravagant gift hidden at the back to be opened last. Stockings are stuffed nearly overflowing the top, and the preparations for a feast already put into motion. A flurry of activity awaits pregnant with the anticipation of glee and delight, the camera ready to capture every memory for one to look back upon with fondness and nostalgia.

Christmas morning. The artwork of a mother’s heart.

This day is the day we choose to celebrate the birth of our beloved Saviour. This day is the day that the most extravagant gift of all was unwrapped by the hands of God.

The spirit of Christmas. The artwork of the Father’s heart.

In the Old Testament, it was foretold that the Messiah would be born in a town called Bethlehem, the first messianic prophecy being that He would be born unto a woman:

Micah 5:2, But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.

Genesis 3:15, And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.

Jesus fulfilled these promises as recorded in the both the Gospel of Luke and the Epistle to the Galatians, a letter from the Apostle Paul to the early Christians in Galatia:

Luke 2:4-6, So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born.

Galatians 4:4, But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law.

A baby boy was born, the greatest gift bestowed unto a lost and dying world. He came as one of us with flesh upon His bones and a soul that would experience the complexities of humanity. Yet He came as God’s Son, one without sin who would draw God’s people unto Himself so that God would always be among them.

We are forged for our hope so that we may die unto our own flesh and experience the gift of an abundant life in Jesus. We are forged for our hope so that we may take our eyes off of ourselves and place them securely upon the throne of the one true God. And we are forged for our hope so that we may never forget that it doesn’t end here. There is life everlasting beyond what we experience in this world. There are great plans and purposes for us to fulfill so that we may rise into heaven with a crown placed atop our heads and the words of our Saviour embedded deep within our hearts.

May we always remember why we celebrate this day we call Christmas, and why we count down the days called Advent. In anticipation of His extravagance, let us keep our heads held high seeking His presence to descend from the clouds calling His faithful church to His side.

We are forged for our hope so that we may hear, “Well done good and faithful servant.” We are forged for our hope so that our knee will bow and our tongue shall confess that He is Lord. And we are forged for our hope so that the world who watches will witness the power of Christ at work.

We are forged not for us, but for Him.

Father, though the bottom of the tree is full of presents and the table overflows with a bounty of blessing, thank you for your Son Jesus whom you sent as the greatest gift of all. We are forged for Christ and the hope we have in Him for the abundant life that you have promised. In Jesus name, amen.

25 Days of Advent: Forged for our Hope – Day 24

The rain began to pour from the clouds with a greater fury than moments before, hitting the window pane leaving blurry streaks on the glass. The grass is an unusual shade of green for this time of the year. Blades of bright green grace the ground looking more like Easter is on the horizon than Christmas.

For those of us in colder climates, many of us long for the gentle presence of a white Christmas. Soft, wet, fluffy snow that twirls down from the clouds in the sky like the sparkly flakes inside a snow globe. We love it when the waters freeze so that ice skating may commence, and hot chocolate does its duty warming us from the inside out.

Perhaps it is because the presence of a pure white blanket of snow reminds our soul of the purity held within a clean slate. There lies deep within us a desire for all that is unclean to be washed away and unblemished once again.

Perhaps that is why it was of purity that the Messiah would come into this tarnished world. He would be born of a virgin, His conception one orchestrated by the very hand of the Father, nestled within the womb of one God knew possessed a submitted heart and obedient spirit.

Isaiah 7:14, Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Jesus was born unto this virgin, His mother Mary, when she was around the tender age of fifteen. A girl on the brink of womanhood, she was betrothed to Joseph and found herself with child. Joseph was unwilling to bring shame upon Mary deciding to divorce her quietly, but an angel appeared in a dream encouraging him to take Mary as his wife for the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph was informed by the angel that the child would be a son and his name would be Jesus. This child was a gift from God to the world to save His people from their sin. Scripture tells us that all this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the prophet Isaiah:

Matthew 1:22-23, All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

We are forged for our hope when we can allow Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit, wipe our heart and soul clean of all our sin and unrighteousness making us pure before the Father once again. We cannot allow the mistakes of our past keep us walking in the mucky pits that litter the surface of this world.

And God did not send a Messiah that would simply cover our sins with a blanket of purity but completely remove the impurities themselves. We too may be reborn in purity. But some impurities are imbedded a little deeper than others perhaps causing the forging take a little longer. But no matter how long the forging, no matter how deep our impurities may go, He came with the name Immanuel for He is with us through it all.

Father, create in me a clean heart, wiping away my impurities and unrighteousness for I long to be made holy; set apart for you in this world. In Jesus name, amen.

25 Days of Advent: Forged for our Hope – Day 23

The air was warm and heavily saturated with the smells of cloves and molasses. Awkward looking gingerbread men were making their way into the hot oven covered in telltale signs that children’s fingers had been hard at work.

While the cookies were baking and children were busy playing, my friend was attempting to make sense of a situation that was greatly grieving her heart. She shared her view that as a parent, it is most frustrating when you can see in foresight the consequences of your child’s choices, but they just don’t seem to listen to warning that slips from our lips and over our tongues.

That must be how God feels about His very own children- the children that are both you and I- far too often.

In the book of Genesis we find Abraham, the founding father of the Jewish nation of Israel, father to Isaac, and grandfather to Jacob. Abraham was a man of deep faith who walked in obedience to the one true God. In Hebrew his names means “father of a multitude”. Originally his name was Abram but God had renamed him Abraham as a symbol of the covenant that through Abraham a great nation would arise. A nation that God would draw unto Himself calling them his own people. The only requirement placed upon Abraham in this covenant was that he must obey God and do all that God instructed him to do.

Unfortunately, in his sinful humanity, when the waters of his faith were rising testing his obedience, Abraham struggled to fulfill what was required of him. Losing faith in God’s provision and promise of protection, Abraham made foolish decisions and fell into deception against the Pharaoh. He fled in times of crisis, lied, took bribes, and tried to fulfill God’s promise by his own hands.

Oh, how the Lord must have grieved over His child Abraham and the foolish choices he was making not heeding to the warning signs that his sin would cause him suffering. But God made a promise and would not go back on His word honouring the covenant He made with Abraham. God had the foresight to know that His plan was greater than Abraham’s sin.

Genesis 22:18, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”

The Messiah would come through Abraham’s lineage bringing salvation to all His children, not just the nation of Israel:

Romans 9:5, Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.

We are forged for our hope when we can obey, submitting unto the covenant Christ has made with us. Though we may struggle with the testing of our faith, we cannot give up our hope for His greater plan to prevail. Situations and circumstances in our life may bring us to our knees, luring us with the temptation to flee, lie, or bargain our way out, but God’s provision and protection over a life submitted is greater than any sin.

Let us be mindful not allowing our impatience and fear guide us into making foolish decisions letting go of God’s promises. And may we always remember that there is nothing that can separate us from God’s love.

Father, though I sometimes struggle to stand firm upon the foundation of your promises, steady my legs so that I may never fall. Your provision and protection over my life is all that I truly need. May I heed to your warning, obeying all that you ask of me to do. In Jesus name, amen,

25 Days of Advent: Forged for our Hope – Day 22

While in the midst of a deep discussion over hot coffee, a mentor shared with my husband a sentiment that rooted itself into his soul. He asked if my husband knew when it was the best time to plant a tree. Put on the spot by a riddle, my husband confessed he didn’t have an answer. In a straight forward manner laced with the smirk of a child, he revealed the simplicity of the answer.

Ten years ago.

There is a well-known proverb proclaiming that hindsight is better than foresight. I means that it is always easier for us to evaluate past choices than at the time we have to make the choice. Perhaps Sarah, the wife of Abraham, experienced such a feeling after she laughed at God and His prophecy, and then denied that she did it. Perhaps she should not have wavered in her faith.

But the Lord’s word is never failing and His plans will always prevail. Miracles happen during difficult situations and circumstances because we are often forced to stop standing in the way thinking we can do better than God. Sarah was barren for many, many years and tried to push the miracle along by convincing Abraham to lie with her servant Hagar and impregnate her so God’s promise would come to fruition. A son was born to Hagar and Abraham who was named Ishmael.

Then, at the ripe old age of ninety years old, God told Abraham that Sarah would have a son in fulfillment of His promise that Abraham’s descendants would be a great nation. Sarah was eavesdropping and overheard the Lord and laughed at His proclamation for she was elderly and did not believe she could bear a child. By the next year, when Ishmael was approximately thirteen years of age, Sarah bore a son named Issac who’s name means “he laughs”.

Genesis 17:19, Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

The Lord would not go back on His word nor covenant to Abraham and the promise was fulfilled. Again, the Messiah would come from the lineage of Jacob, Issac, and Abraham. Christ fulfilled this prophecy as recorded in the Gospel of Luke:

Luke 3:34, the son of Jacob,
the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham,
the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,

We are forged for our hope when we trust that God can perform miracles beyond our human capacity for understanding. The facts may not add up in our limited vision, but God does not need the facts to push forward His plans and purposes. He will not break His covenant with His people and sent His Son to stand in the gap so that we may come to Him. He has placed dreams and visions within our hearts to be carried out for His great purposes.

There were grave consequences to Sarah standing in the way of God’s miracle and attempting to push it along by her own hands. Let us learn from Sarah’s hindsight that when we are seeking the kingdom, wanting to give all of glory unto the one true King, we can be sure that the forging will test our hearts of our true motives and desires.

All Jesus needs is a heart and soul willing to submit unto Him. Like Sarah, we may be tempted to laugh in innocent ignorance, or stand in disbelief at the facts allowing our faith to waver, but the Lord’s plans will prevail if we can set aside our pride trusting that He will never leave us nor forsake us along the journey.

Father, don’t let me stand in the way of your miracle for I know that I can do nothing good and pure for your kingdom by my own hand. Though sometimes I may waver in my faith, unable to see your plan in foresight, I know that your word can always be trusted. In Jesus name, amen.

25 Days of Advent: Forged for our Hope – Day 21

As the congregation bowed their heads, the worship leader stood at the front of the stage to lead everyone in prayer. As he began lifting up eloquent praise, he tripped over a few of his words allowing a small laugh to escape his lips. But, though he stumbled, he finished his prayer and it was heartfelt and pure and truly glorified the one true King whom he serves. He allowed God to use his imperfect nature to cast a light upon Christ’s perfect character.

In the scriptures we trace Christ’s lineage to the Patriarch’s of the Old Testament. There we find Jacob, son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham whom God established His covenant with the Israelites. Through the covenant with Abraham God continued to pour His blessing into the lives of Isaac, Jacob, and all those who descended from Jacob’s lineage such as Jacob’s sons who became the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Numbers 24:17, “I see him, but not now;
I behold him, but not near.
A star will come out of Jacob;
a scepter will rise out of Israel.
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,
the skulls of all the people of Sheth.

But Jacob was not a perfect man for he was known as a schemer, liar, and manipulator. This legacy began at his very own birth as his name means ‘deceiver’. He was born a twin, coming forth from his mother Rebekah’s womb holding on to the heel of his brother Esau. Later in his life, he and his mother would cheat Esau from his rightful inheritance as the firstborn son of the family.

Jacob’s life and legacy is deep and rich as he eventually matured in his faith growing more and more dependant on God. Jacob finally gave up control of his life and God renamed him “Israel” the meaning of which is “struggles with God”. How fitting for this man and the lineage of people who would follow after him.

The promise was that the coming Messiah would come from the lineage of Jacob, and Christ fulfilled this prophesy hailing from the tribe of Judah:

Matthew 1:2, Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

We are forged for our hope when we, like Jacob, can let go of the control of our lives maturing in our faith. The forging requires us to have a greater dependancy upon Christ and not ourselves, our career, our things, or even others. Only God.

The Lord greatly desires for Christ’s perfection to be glorified through His imperfect people. If we were perfect, able to live life without times of strife or trouble, then we would not need a Saviour. Like God redeemed Jacob, blessing not only him but his lineage, we have have been given the gift of experiencing the same blessings through Christ.

We belong to His tribe, forged for His purposes, allowing our imperfect lives to glorify His perfect plans.

Father, use my imperfection to glorify your throne, allowing others to see you at work within me. I can do nothing of lasting value for your kingdom by my own hands but by the power of Christ. Humble my heart to do your good works bringing blessing to those who seek your name. In Jesus name, amen.

An abundance of utensils and various sized glasses claimed the much needed elbow room as we readied ourselves to dig into a small feast. My husband glanced around the table and offered to say a prayer for our meal.

It is a moment where obedience and adoration complete with the noise of the world around you and the pride of the soul within you. One becomes keenly aware of those who are suddenly within the boundaries of personal space. Prayers before meals in public spaces are often interrupted by servers and busboys, and the conversations of other patrons suddenly seem quieter than the moment before. Perhaps out of respect, perhaps out of curiosity.

But no matter the tongue, no matter the god that one is praying to, a public prayer is a confession to the world the tribe of which you belong.

It was prophesied in the first book of the bible, Genesis, that the coming Messiah would come from the tribe of Judah:

Genesis 49:10, The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he to whom it belongs shall come
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

A scepter is a staff often depicted as an ornament held within the hand of a ruler symbolizing power and authority over the people. This prophesy declares that the coming power and authority over God’s people will come from the tribe of Judah which itself means ‘praise’. We find evidence in Christ’s lineage, and a scripture laced with conviction recorded in the book of Hebrews, that Jesus fulfilled this very prophesy for He descended from the tribe Judah as did King David. God had made the covenant with David that the coming Messiah would come from his lineage. This fulfilled prophesy signals a change from the old covenant to our new covenant with Christ for in Jewish law, all former priests hailed from the tribe of Levi.

Hebrews 7:14, For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.

We are forged for our hope when we set aside our fears and inhibitions to publicly confess to which tribe we belong with our loyalty to our King on full display in humility obedience.

Most of us have not had the privilege of being born into a royal lineage. We don’t share a bathroom and break bread over the dinner table with any heirs to an earthly throne. But under our new covenant with Christ we are given the most incredible gift of being seated with a multitude of heirs to the one true King at a banquet in heaven.

And at this banquet there are no undersized tables. We will not worry over limited elbow room nor be interrupted by servers and busboys. The conversations of others will not distract us, and our obedience and adoration will never compete with anything else.

Father, may I never forget which tribe I will serve all my days. Though my soul may quiver at the truth that the world is always watching, may I represent my Father’s house wherever I go. Give me God-confidence to proclaim Christ’s name and my lineage in all that I do. In Jesus name, amen.

The coffee shop was buzzing with people squished into booths and sharing seats; baristas catching quick breaths between white foam creations and the grinding of fresh beans.

I listened as a friend shared with me a story of something that recently happened with her young children. Curious about details of the Christmas story, her children peppered her with questions about why baby Jesus had to be born in a manager, and where Bethlehem was let alone why He was born there. Their curiosity led to her humble confession that she did not know the story of the Messiah’s birth in any detail and greatly desired a deeper understanding of not only the legendary story, but her faith as a whole. Like her children, she is hungry for more knowledge with her own curiosity unsatisfied.

What I heard was a woman opening her heart and confessing her need for a stronger foundation of faith and desire to know her heritage as a child of God.

In the book of Samuel we find the prophet Nathan receiving a word from the Lord for King David. David had just defeated the Philistines in an epic battle and he and his army were taking the ark of God to Jerusalem. The ark was a wooden box adorned with gold that carried within it the two stone tablets of the ten commandments written by Moses, Aaron’s rod, and a pot of manna. The ark was fixed upon the top of a cart that was driven by two men, Uzzah and Ahio the sons of Abinadab. Along the journey the chosen men of David we offering up their praises to the Lord with joyous songs and the playing of various instruments. When they had finally reached the threshing floor Nacon, Uzzah put his hand out and touched the ark of God. Uzzah’s careless action angered the Lord and he was struck down immediately dying beside the ark itself.

The ark of God was to be treated with reverence, the hearts of men to be humble before it. But it was disrespect and presumption that the Lord saw within Uzzah’s heart and his careless behaviour caused him a most tragic death. David had eventually erected a tent where the ark was sheltered but had it within his mind to create a house of cedar.

But the Lord did not desire a house of cedar and had a word for David: He had been with David wherever he went, saving him from his enemies. The Lord then made a covenant with David that the coming Messiah would come from David’s lineage and when His kingdom came, His throne would be established forever:

2 Samuel 7:12-13, When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

The Lord’s promise to King David was fulfilled by Christ, recorded in the Gospel of Luke:

Luke 1:32-33, He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

When we are submitted unto the Messiah, accepting Christ the Messiah as our Savior, setting aside our fleshly desires to serve only His kingdom and not our own, we become a child of the one true God. And as a child of God, a covenant is established and we are given the greatest privilege of becoming heirs to a King’s throne.

We are forged for our hope when our covenant established through Christ is given the reverence and respect it greatly deserves. We must be careful not to become careless in our actions and indifferent to the heritage we have been gifted. When the pressures of the world begin to weigh on us, our faith tested from one situation to another, one of the greatest prayers we can lay before our King is one of seeking spiritual hunger to know Him greater than we know ourselves.

Father, help me to set aside all my self-confidence only seeking God-confidence in all that I do for your kingdom. May I always be aware of my heritage, never careless or indifferent to your throne singing songs of praise for the covenant you have established through the blood of your Son. In Jesus name, amen.

25 Days of Advent: Forged for our Hope – Day 18

Lines. Long, twisty, patience testing ones. Christmas seems to be full of them. I have come to learn through trial and error that the key to successful line waiting is to keep to yourself and pay attention. For if you turn your eyes for a mere moment, there may be someone who will notice and take it upon themselves to test your nerves.

My fingers had barely grazed the object of my affection so conveniently placed at eye level at the checkout counter when an older gentleman walked himself into my personal space to step in front of me in the line. It was a move so blatant, swift, and raw. My emotions were instantly in utter confusion and chaos as to how I should react.

Our human nature is to react in offence, and so easily we do, for we seem to be naturally bent in that direction. It is our choice whether or not we walk in offence to the actions of another. In a moment where the heat and pressure of the world was forging my soul with the eyes of several strangers upon me, I was forced to make a choice whether I would be gracious, seeking eternal rewards by honouring my King, or unleash the words lingering upon my tongue feeling better in the moment by seeking worldly rewards.

Obedience means doing what is right, not what is easy.

In the book of Daniel we find the prophet interpreting king Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. The king was having most disturbing dreams that troubled his spirit and caused him great sleep deprivation. He called upon all the magicians, enchanters, the sorcerers, astronomers, and astrologers to decipher his dreams offering them gifts and rewards of great honour if they could give him clarity and understanding. If not, he would have them torn limb from limb. When they could not make sense of the dream the king demanded that they be killed. Daniel spared the lives of these worldly men by going before the king and revealing to him the intimacies of his dream seeing it through the spiritual eyes of heaven.

Nebuchadnezzar’s spirit was most certainly troubled for Daniel prophesied of the coming Messiah, and the kingdom that He would rule would never be brought down in destruction but reign over all kingdoms forever:

Daniel 2:44, “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.

Daniel was forced to make a choice whether he would honour God by speaking the truth, or telling king Nebuchadnezzar what he may have desired to hear accepting worldly rewards in return. The fulfillment of Daniel’s prophesy is found twice in the New Testament, the first of which in the Gospel of Luke:

Luke 1:33, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

We are forged for our hope when we seek eternal rewards from Christ by choosing obedience, not the external rewards of the world desiring gratification and justification.

The Messiah came rule over the heart and soul of man- our heart and soul often being our personal kingdoms. It is the kingdom that we serve each and every moment of each and every day. But our earthly kingdoms will one day crumble and we will account for how we served. Did we store up our eternal rewards by serving the one true King with the kingdom that is anointed and eternal? Or did we serve our self-appointed kingdom storing up worldly rewards seeking self gratification?

Father, help me to always make wise choices that reflect the character of Christ at work within me, seeking eternal rewards not worldly rewards. Obedience is not easy with some choices harder than others, but may I lay my personal kingdom before your throne allowing Christ to rule with strength and love. In Jesus name, amen.

25 Days of Advent: Forged for our Hope – Day 17

We know there are times when Jesus asks of us to do hard things. And sometimes we must weather difficult seasons. These truths are most evident when we submit unto the authority of God’s throne and are forged for His plans and purposes. Yes, of this we are always learning.

Doing hard things and standing firm in our faith during difficult seasons not only cause us to scrape the bottom of our spiritual well for our last ounce of courage, but they cause us to learn the greatest of lessons in being obedient to the one true King.

This is because obedience means doing what is right, not what is easy.

More often than not we struggle in our humanity wanting to travel the easy road, avoiding the unknown darkness of the road less travelled. Uncertainty causes ones soul to quiver with uneasiness. Because of the sinful nature of our humanity that we battle each and every day, Isaiah prophesied that God would send a Messiah who would provide for our greatest needs: our security. Christ would be called Immanuel, God with us, for our greatest fear is fighting the battles of life alone.

Isaiah 7:14, Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

In the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew we encounter the first telling of Jesus’ birth. An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and shared that Mary was indeed with child which the Holy Spirit had placed within her. She would bear a son who would be called by the name Jesus, and he would save his people from their sin. Joseph was told by the angel that this was the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah:

Matthew 1:23, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

We are forged for our hope when we can not only hold firmly to our faith, but stand upon the truth that no matter the situation or circumstance of life, God is with us. God fleshed Himself out into the body and Spirit of His Son so that He may forever be with us. His beloved children need not fight the battles of life on their own. Their King would go before them to prepare the way across the battlefield.

Though we are forged, constantly coming under the heat and pressure of the world around us, Christ has never- and will never- forsake us, leaving us to be scattered among the ashes. When we cry out to Him, He hears us. When we lash out at Him, He is patient with us. When we can set aside the struggle and submit in obedience our pride, anger, lust, greed, and fear, there are no limits to how His strength and power will work through us.

Father, though I prefer to do what is easy, help me to always do what is right. May I never forget that you are always with me in all I do, loving me no matter my faults and failures. Teach me to be obedient never wavering in my faith that you hold the future in your mighty hands. In Jesus name, amen.

25 Days of Advent: Forged for our Hope – Day 16

Joseph grabbed the little that he had and stuffed it into a simple, threadbare bedroll. He looked to Mary and urged her to layer Jesus with an extra muslin shirt to give his delicate skin warmth against the cool night air. Mary herself had wrapped an extra layer across her shoulders as she puttered about the room careful to remove any traces that a young child had been there.

With a soul that weighed heavy and pregnant with fear, Joseph watered the donkey and tied the bedroll to its back. The moon hung high and bright, sure to guide their way. They would flee from Bethlehem across the desert to the borders of Egypt, eager to escape the human hunting that was sure to follow on the heels of their steps.

In the book of Hosea, it was prophesied that Christ would be called out of Egypt by the Lord when His time came:

Hosea 11:1, “When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.

The Messiah had been spared from the massacre and carried to safety only to endure a most stressful season of life. A season of fear where they would need to await the death of the king who demanded the head of God’s Son- the child they were entrusted to raise. In the Gospel of Matthew, it is identified that this was done to fulfill the prophesy of Hosea:

Matthew 2:14-15, So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

We are forged for our hope when we can seek Christ’s peace when life forces our hand to endure a most difficult season. And it is often during the difficult seasons of life that our faith is greatly tested.

Will we stand upon the promises of God or succumb to despair and fear? Will we thrive or barely survive when everything we’ve got is on the line?

Mary and Joseph had to live each day on the promise that God had a greater plan. All they endured was out of their great love for the Lord and for His purposes. Their foundation was built upon a faith that was forged by obedience, patience, adoration, and submission.

Whether we face a season riddled with illness, conflict, deteriorating relationships, anxiety, depression, or financial burden, when we hold tightly to the truth that God is with us during each and every season of life, we may rest assured that His plans for our good will prevail when the stormy winds blow.

Father, as I weather difficult seasons of life that threaten to bring me down, may your spirit lift me up and keep me from harm. May I remember that I have been spared for your purposes and submitted unto your plans for my life. In Jesus name, amen.
