My foot began to cramp as I barrelled along the highway at a rapid clip. Moving with the flow of traffic, I kept both hands steady on the steering wheel so that I felt a deeper sense of control over the car. The rain outside the windows pelted heavily against the glass creating a flow of water and blurry film that impaired my line of vision on the road ahead.

All I wanted was to get home. And in one piece if you can find-that-in-your-will-Lord. As life would have it, as I passed that last refuel station a good distance away from my city limits, the gas light went on in the car. I thought I would have enough fuel in the car to get me home. Apparently I gambled and I lost. My prayers shifted as rapidly as my car’s speed. Please Lord, just get me to the next gas station.

And in those prayers I pondered. How often do we keep barrelling along in life at a rapid clip only to hit a shortfall in our spiritual tank? How often do we gamble and lose?

I believe one of the first steps in growing- and sustaining- our faith is to continually ask The Lord to refresh our spiritual tank- our spiritual well- with living water. We must read His Word, commune with Him often, press into His Spirit, and submit in His presence. These practices are daily. Moment-by-moment even. They are not only life-giving but life-sustaining. When we ask, He is faithful to provide.

2 Corinthians 5:17, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

I made it to the edge of the city and refuelled my car just as I was scraping the bottom of the gas-tank barrel. But even if I hadn’t, I know The Lord would have been with me right in the middle of my mess anyhow. When we gamble and we lose, there are always consequences to our actions. I could have done without the stress, but when we live, we learn. And there is always mercy in the mess.

Father, we ask and you provide. Please transform our spiritual wells into overflowing vessels with your precious living water so that when we find ourselves in need, we’ll know that there is nowhere else to go for our refreshment. Amen.
