Wandering through a secondhand store, I stopped to peruse a large blue bin of books. Piles upon piles of books of all various types were stacked together creating mountain of ideas and ideologies.

On the other side of the bin, directly in my line of vision, stood a woman several years older than I with a crown of golden hair. She was methodically turing the pages of a book that contained glossy photographs depicting images of war. As she absorbed herself in the book, she shared aloud in a thick accent the commentary running through her head.

She poked her finger at photos of children lying in streets with mournful mothers collapsed over their bodies. Photos of smoke and rubble and fragments of burning buildings. She was shaking her head as the pages slipped though her fingers. Nearing the end of the book, she landed on a picture of a political figure I did not recognize. She did not have kind words to describe this man.

I held my breath and this woman opened herself up to share that she had come from a communist upbringing. She believed and lived the communist way. Until she did not. As a highly educated history enthusiast, she knew more than I of government and power and corruption. She nearly spat when she spoke of war and religion and mind control. And when she finished her rant of sorts, she told me she believed in God. Just God.

I listened. I waited. I smiled. And I asked her if she had met His Son Jesus. I spoke softly and shared the Words of Christ- that He came to abolish religion for it is through personal relationship with Jesus that we are saved. I spoke the truth that Jesus loved every soul who’s face is forever entombed within the pages of the book she held tightly in her hands. I spoke of my own experience with Jesus and how I am forever changed because of His great love for me. I pressed into the Holy Spirit for the simple words that would make it understandable to this strangers bitter heart.

She listened. She waited. She smiled. When I was confronted with this moment, I felt the tug of the Holy Spirit and needed to ask myself, what would Jesus do?

1 Corinthians 2:16, We have the mind of Christ

When Jesus was confronted with the harshness of the world, He spoke truth. His Father’s truth. He knew His Father’s words and shared them with all authority and power. And when He departed this world, He left us the gift of the Holy Spirit to continue to do His work of sharing truth- the Father’s truth. By the Holy Spirit, we can have great understanding of the scriptures and these spiritual truths. We possess the ability to have the mind of Christ because we have the Spirit of Christ within us. We must not let the ideas and ideologies of others influence the way we think. To do so will only cause great conflict and confusion leading us away from the path of truth.

And if we desire to have the mind of Christ, we must read the words He wrote. His heart, His mission, His purpose, His great love… all penned upon the pages of His best selling book.

Father, help us to press into the Holy Spirit so that the mind of Christ can dwell within us, giving us great understanding on how to reach out to others and share your truths. In Jesus name, Amen.
